![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Producer-writer Warren Duff adapted Margaret Carpenter’s novel in daring ways (changing the contemporary setting to 1903 New York, for example) that partly account for Tourneur’s film being the most sensible and credible example of this type of plot. With the help of an excellent, sensitive, well-researched appreciation, Chris Fujiwara’s Jacques Tourneur: The Cinema of Nightfall, I’m better able to “see” this director’s work, including two RKO productions now available on demand from Warner Archives: Experiment Perilous and Berlin Express.Įxperiment Perilous falls into a lineage of movies with “Gaslight” plots, where a husband tries to convince his wife she’s going mad the Ingrid Bergman Gaslight had come out the same year. I think his greatest achievement is possibly Stars in My Crown, a foreigner’s point of view on sentimental Americana, and to my knowledge the only American film between The Birth of a Nation and Storm Warning to feature the Ku Klux Klan the underseen Way of a Gaucho also demands attention. He’s most famous for directing Cat People and I Walked with a Zombie for producer Val Lewton, and also the noir film Out of the Past. Jacques Tourneur, son of the great silent pictorialist Maurice Tourneur, spent some of his career in France, but most of it on Hollywood B-films. ![]() ![]() ![]() Characters default to White.įans of the previous entry will enjoy following the story of a young woman who changes the fates of two countries.Ī teenage, not-so-lonely loner endures the wilds of high school in Austin, Texas. ![]() Hollis and Etan’s verbal wars are fun, predictably leading to love, but the political intrigue sometimes drags the novel down. She bravely returns to Coroa to confront King Jameson when she finds out that he, too, has carried out unspeakable crimes. When Etan wants to lead a revolt against his own King Quinten, who is just one of the novel’s major betrayers, Hollis uses her wits to get the evidence needed to convince others that he is guilty of crimes against his own people. The society they live in, modeled after medieval Europe, with castles, tournaments, kings, queens, and nobles, generally follows traditional gender roles, but Hollis sometimes breaks through the accepted boundaries. Etan, Silas’ cousin, arrives to escort the family, and he clashes with Hollis from the moment they meet. Formerly primarily interested in dresses, dancing, and romance, Hollis now proves her mettle. Since Silas, his father, his brothers, and her parents have been killed, she decides to travel to Isolte with her mother-in-law and sister-in-law. In The Betrothed (2020), Hollis fell in love with Silas, the son of an Isolten family who sought asylum from their cruel king, and chose him over her intended match, King Jameson. Lady Hollis flees her country after her new husband is killed. ![]() 6/24/2023 0 Comments Neurotribes book![]() The book has multiple mini-biographies in it, used to illustrate the lives of the afflicted, their parents and siblings, and the psychologists who have both massively messed these folks up for a few centuries, and who have taken years and years to see those afflicted with these conditions as beings worthy of respect. It becomes obvious from reading this book that some of our most respected and effective scientists and engineers exist on the autism/Asperger's spectrum. This book is extremely well-researched and dense with detail about the history of the "treatment" of autism and Asperger's Syndrome. It's only recently (this century!) that autism and neurodiversity have been recognized as truly unique conditions that are outside of the schizophrenia diagnoses that children with autism would receive during and before the 20th century. ![]() This long book takes the reader through the unfortunate history of autism - how western society and psychiatry have failed neurodiverse people since the 1800s. Then we have Vataea who is a mermaid and I wish she’d been introduced earlier because she was amazing, so strong and fierce. Honestly the heroine, Amora, was pretty boring apart from her magic (which I’ll get to later) but the side characters were fantastic! I adored them all. ‣ Trigger and Content Warnings: death, physical and emotional abuse, sexual assual (mentioned), gore, violence My Thoughts A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected… or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever. Of course, all of that becomes super simple if you pick up the X-Men: Mutant Massacre omnibus, which collects the entire crossover event in a single book. That means it can be a little tricky to read from start to finish without a guide. This event combines Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor, and New Mutants, and it spills into The Mighty Thor, Daredevil, Power Pack, and even Fantastic Four and Avengers (kind of). ![]() ![]() While Secret Wars II predates it, Mutant Massacre was the first Marvel crossover event that revolved specifically around the X-Men. While X-Men stories had been spilling into other Marvel series since the very beginning (they showed up in Fantastic Four after just five issues of the original series), it wouldn’t be until the mid-1980s when they started having full-on multi-series crossover events. ![]() 6/24/2023 0 Comments Krysten ritter bonfire a novel![]() ![]() Ritter and her dog Mikey split their time between New York and Los Angeles. Boyer![]() ![]() ![]() Temperatures began to drop at the beginning of the fourteenth century, with the coldest periods occurring from 1680 to 1730. The economic theories of the Salem events tend to be two-fold: the first attributes the witchcraft trials to an economic downturn caused by a “little ice age” that lasted from 1550-1800 the second cites socioeconomic issues in Salem itself.Įmily Oster posits that the “little ice age” caused economic deterioration and food shortages that led to anti-witch fervor in communities in both the United States and Europe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The mystery around the hysteria and miscarriage of justice continue to inspire new critiques, most recently with the recent release of The Witches: Salem, 1692 by Pulitzer Prize-winning Stacy Schiff.īut what caused the mass hysteria, false accusations, and lapses in due process? Scholars have attempted to answer these questions with a variety of economic and physiological theories. The Salem witch trials occupy a unique place in our collective history. Trials ensued and, when the episode concluded in May 1693, fourteen women, five men, and two dogs had been executed for their supposed supernatural crimes. ![]() In February 1692, the Massachusetts Bay Colony town of Salem Village found itself at the center of a notorious case of mass hysteria: eight young women accused their neighbors of witchcraft. ![]() |
